With assets of just over $1 billion, William Penn Foundation is one of the largest foundations in the Philadelphia region, and was ranked the 45th largest foundation in the country in 2004 (Source: Foundation Center "Top 100 U.S. Foundations by Asset Size").

Founded in 1945 by Phoebe and Otto Haas (one of the founders of the Rohm and Haas Company), the William Penn Foundation supports nonprofit organizations working in the Philadelphia region, and concentrates its giving in three major grant areas: Arts & Culture, Children, Youth & Families; and Environment & Communities. In 2003, William Penn awarded 205 grants totaling $61.2 million, and paid $60 million on 377 active grants. William Penn employs over 20 professional staff and is governed by an 11-member board of directors, which still includes several members of the Haas family.
